There will be no senioritis for Lima Senior High School senior Ceyshon Huggins. In fact, it is quite the opposite.
“This is the final stretch,” he said. “I want to continue what I have done the last three years into this year.”
And what the son of Erin Dunson and Calin Huggins has done is impressive, starting with maintaining a 3.7 grade-point average while being very active at school.
Ceyshon has the highest academic standing by an African American male in the school, earning him an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Scholarship. He was Lima’s winner of the award, being recognized recently at a banquet in Troy.
Ceyshon is in Lima Senior’s engineering program, a perfect fit for a student who has always excelled in science and math.
He is interested in possibly majoring in mechanical or biomedical engineering next year, but also has an interest in sports medicine. He is looking at The Ohio State University, the University of Toledo or the University of Cincinnati.
Ceyshon plays the viola in Lima Senior’s Orchestra, Satin Strings ensemble and the Lima Area Youth Orchestra. He started with the instrument in the fourth grade.
“Everyone else wanted to play the violin and then the cello,” he recalled. “I just wanted to be different.”
Ceyshon is also a member of the National Honor Society, GSA/Spectrum and Youth And Government program. He was on the Spartan football team and plans to play lacrosse in the spring. He also plays and coaches roller hockey.
“I try to manage my time wisely,” he said of maintaining the grade and being so involved.
Ceyshon was chosen last school year to be a member of the Lima City Schools Hall of Fame Selection Committee. He was the only student representative and says the experience opened his eyes.
“I did not realize so many great people came out of the Lima City Schools,” he said.
While that came as somewhat of a surprise, Ceyshon has never doubted the kind of education he has received through the Lima City Schools.
“All of my teachers – from kindergarten until now – have taught me not just the books, but about life as well,” he said. “They have definitely prepared me for my future.”
