Lima Senior High School’s DECA marketing program was on display at the recent Student Achievement Fair at the Ohio School Boards Association’s Capital Conference.

The Achievement Fair was held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Greater Columbus Conference Center. The event features innovative projects and programs schools have created to boost student achievement and engage students in learning and growth.

Schools have to apply and be accepted to take part. The DEAC booth featured the Big Spartans Little Spartans program and Around the Spartan.

Big Spartans Little Spartans: Students spend one day a week working with North Middle School fifth and sixth graders staff believe would benefit. Each middle schooler has a DECA mentor. They help with school work, do activities together, become close friends and plan community service projects together. In its third year, the program has proven impactful for both sets of students.

Around the Spartan: Using a broadcast studio in the high school, students last year created a sportscast showed each Friday on closed-circuit TVs in the school. The student anchors wrap up the week in sports and interview athletes and coaches. It now also includes other school news beyond athletics. The show is based on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” and includes local business sponsorships.

The following Lima Senior DECA students took part in the Achievement Fair: Madison Katuramu, Haley Vermilion, Ashiana Sigman, Aaron Bennett, Jelisa Austin and Je’Nautica Luster. The DECA program is led by teachers Melissa Donald and Christina Hood.

Lima Senior will also had a piece of student artwork on display at the conference. The artist is Carolina Aguirre.
