Several students in the Lima City Schools have received recent music and art honors and have been rewarded for their hard work and talent. Below are a few of the honors:
- Junior Jase Hickman has been selected to the High School Honor Choir and will perform in Salt Lake City, Utah, in February. The choir will sing works specifically commissioned for its performances in the Mormon Tabernacle and the Abravanel Hall (home of the Utah Symphony).
About 3,000 students send auditions to get in national honor choirs. Ten percent are accepted. Senior Brad Stubbs was also selected, but had to decline because of his recent selection to a state DECA office.
Sally Windle, the district’s director of arts and magnet programs, said two 2010 Lima Senior graduates got into the choir while in school. The experience, she said, helped them get scholarships and prepared them for their current careers in music.
“It is a unique opportunity they could only get in the Lima City Schools,” she said. “For some of these kids they never get the opportunity to go out of the state of Ohio let alone across the country.”
- Lima Senior High Symphonic Band member Nathaniel Bankston has been accepted into the District 3 Ohio Music Educators Association Honor Band. This competitive group includes the best musicians from over 25 high schools in the area. Bankston is a junior.
- Lima Senior Band member David Grundisch was asked to perform “Taps” at the Veterans Day service at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center. The Spartones vocal ensemble was selected to perform the National Anthem.
- Three Liberty Arts Magnet students won the Lima Host Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. The winners are eighth grader Cora Bicknell (first place), sixth grader Josie Shauf (second place) and sixth grader Noah Phillips (third place). The three were honored at a recent luncheon Wednesday.
This art contest encourages students, ages 11, 12 and 13, to express their visions of peace. For more than 25 years, millions of children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. This year’s theme was “Peace, Love and Understanding.
